So while everyone else was taking the dalgona coffee trend by storm, I decided to try making a version with hojicha! I’m not a coffee drinker so the dalgona coffee trend didn’t appeal to me as much. However, I did start seeing some people trying to make a matcha version. Since I like hojicha more than matcha for its pleasant, roasted, caramel flavour, I thought I would try making a hojicha dalgona!
Unfortunately, I didn’t have any ground hojicha tea on hand so I decided to use my Tsujiri Hojicha Milk Tea powder. You can buy this tea mix at T&T Supermarket. Sad to say, it didn’t work out…I whisked and whisked and whisked some more for what seemed like eternity and nothing happened! I literally went from using a hand whisk, to a milk frother, to my magic bullet, then finally to my hand blender. Nothing worked! It didn’t get all nice and thicc like all the social media posts had suggested 🙁 . I figured it probably had something to do with the lack of a stabilizing agent in the powder itself. So I did some more research and adapted a recipe from @bitesofvancouver for her matcha dalgona. Still didn’t work…my foam just did not turn out as fluffly and thick as the ones on social media. BUT…
I did end up making the best tasting iced hojicha macchiato drink I’ve ever tasted! It basically tasted like a cup of melted hojicha ice cream!!! OMG! So I didn’t successfully make a hojicha dalgona drink, but I did end up making the tastiest hojicha macchiato ever! I gave it to my husband and he said he felt like he was just given a fancy starbucks drink (win!).
I will keep trying to see if I can make a hojicha version of the dalgona drink that actually works. In the meantime, I will also be releasing a recipe soon for hojicha tea cookies that would go perfectly with my iced hojicha macchiato! Be on the look out for that recipe next week!
