Iced Hojicha Macchiato

So while everyone else was taking the dalgona coffee trend by storm, I decided to try making a version with hojicha! I’m not a coffee drinker so the dalgona coffee trend didn’t appeal to me as much. However, I did start seeing some people trying to make a matcha version. Since I like hojicha more than matcha for its pleasant, roasted, caramel flavour, I thought I would try making a hojicha dalgona!

Unfortunately, I didn’t have any ground hojicha tea on hand so I decided to use my Tsujiri Hojicha Milk Tea powder. You can buy this tea mix at T&T Supermarket. Sad to say, it didn’t work out…I whisked and whisked and whisked some more for what seemed like eternity and nothing happened! I literally went from using a hand whisk, to a milk frother, to my magic bullet, then finally to my hand blender. Nothing worked! It didn’t get all nice and thicc like all the social media posts had suggested 🙁 . I figured it probably had something to do with the lack of a stabilizing agent in the powder itself. So I did some more research and adapted a recipe from @bitesofvancouver for her matcha dalgona. Still didn’t work…my foam just did not turn out as fluffly and thick as the ones on social media. BUT…

Hojicha Macchiato

I did end up making the best tasting iced hojicha macchiato drink I’ve ever tasted! It basically tasted like a cup of melted hojicha ice cream!!! OMG! So I didn’t successfully make a hojicha dalgona drink, but I did end up making the tastiest hojicha macchiato ever! I gave it to my husband and he said he felt like he was just given a fancy starbucks drink (win!).

I will keep trying to see if I can make a hojicha version of the dalgona drink that actually works. In the meantime, I will also be releasing a recipe soon for hojicha tea cookies that would go perfectly with my iced hojicha macchiato! Be on the look out for that recipe next week! Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1/3 cup Tsujiri Hojicha Milk Tea Mix*

  • 2 egg whites

  • 3 cups milk**

  • 6 ice cubes

Directions

  • In a small pot over medium heat, bring water and sugar to a boil. Cook until sugar is completely dissolved. This is your sugar syrup.
  • Add hojicha tea mix to the sugar syrup and whisk until completely dissolved. Set aside.
  • In a medium bowl, beat egg whites until soft peaks form.
  • While beating on low speed, slowly drizzle in hojicha syrup into the egg whites. Slowly increase speed to high speed and beat until foamy and incorporated.
  • Divide the ice cubes and milk between two glasses. Slowly pour hojicha foam on top.
  • Mix together milk and hojicha foam before drinking. Enjoy!

Notes

  • *If you can’t find the Tsujiri Hojicha Milk Tea mix, you could also substitute with ground hojicha leaves. However, you may need additional sweetener as the leaves are quite strong and bitter.
  • **Feel free to use any type of milk here including oat, almond, or soy milk.
